The Roman army lived in forts which were like small towns. They used land nearby (territoria) which provided the resources for the maintenance of the fort: pastures, woodland and, if available, quarries, mines and water sources. It also included exercise fields and outside ancillary watchtowers and small camps. Because this land was needed for the resources for the forts, it was well kept. The forts also provided jobs for local civilians. Many forts were by rivers and had fortified riverine naval bases with a polygonal wall with watchtowers and a ditch on one side and docks, boat sheds and the quarters of naval personnel, which had better facilities than that of the forts.
The forts had a wide main street, which ran north-south, the via principalis. The homes or tents of the tribunes (company officers) were alongside this road. Behind them there were the barracks of their soldiers The via principalis was intersected at a right angles by the via Praetoria, which divided the fort into four quarters. It was by the praetorium, the headquarters building which housed the praetor (commander) and his staff. Next to it there was the quaestorium the building of the quaestor, the supply officer. The forts also had other roads and a forum similar to that of towns at the other end. Locals were allowed to the forum to sell their goods. At the centre of the fort there was a central Square, the principia.
The forts also had sewers, private and "public" toilets, a bathhouse, workshops for metalwork and woodwork, a hospital, storehouses for grain and storehouse for meat, facilities for firemen, sheds for heavy weapons, altars for worship and a tribunal for court marshals. The bigger forts were supplied with water by an aqueduct.
