Russia placed missiles in Cuba since Castro was the dictator and had a relationship with the government. The result is that JFK demanded that the missiles be removed since they were only 90 miles from the coast of the United States and when this didn't happen he set up a Naval boycott of the island and didn't allow ships into Cuba. This is the Cuban Missile Crisis and the world was very close to war because of this problem.
