Since there was an unwritten policy to rid the country of the Native American population the bison were affected because they were used by the plains tribes for food, clothing, and worshiped. The trains would stop when a herd was spotted and people would shoot hundreds even thousands of bison. Reports tell of guns getting so hot that they would have to switch to a new weapon. There are pictures of people standing with mountains of bison that they have shot. This and a drought in the 1800's really cut the numbers of herds in half. They have never recovered.
