The population went west for more land, minerals, freedom, and farming. There was a National Road to use for travel and maps where improved.

The Erie Canal gave way to steamships which in turn gave industry and people a secure way to traverse the land.

Once the Railroads where in place that would spur communications ,travel and new jobs. But the cost to the family unit began to emerge when the children left Mom and Dad, so old folks homes and asylums were built.
