A person would got to hell if they did not die in battle - an honourable death. For example, you would go to the Heaven equivalent if you were stabbed by the enemy on the battlefield, but you would not if you died of disease or old age; and would instead go to hell. In hell, the Vikings believed that the victims would spend eternity in a small confined box, eating rotten food (perhaps faeces etc.) and drinking goat's urine. They believed it was very dreary, and nobody would want to go there. The name of Norse Hell is Hel from which the english is derived.
The vikings if they had a peaceful death then they would go to viking heaven (vallhaller) if it was not a peaceful death the they would go to viking hell. Posted by Annie Armstrong

The vikings had several areas of afterlife. The most commonly known one was Valhalla, which is where one went if he honored Odin and was killed in battle. Helheim was the place where most people would go, which was a just simply a place of peace and rest. If you died at sea, you would go to Aegir's and Ran's Hall under the waves. The truly wicked dishonorable oathbreakers would go to Niflheim, to be chewed upon by the dragon Nidhogg.
They believed that Heaven is a place were you fight all die and if you die you will be alive the next day again and fight more They called it Valhalla. Heaven is not described in the Christian, Jewish, or Muslim religions, but in the Viking religion it is much like earth except that everything is perfect. There is plenty to eat and drink, and no hardship.
Most Vikings were farmers.
Val Halla is the acclaimed "heaven" of the vikings.
