The "trench war" that was World War I may be described in quite simple, yet accurate, terms. Fundamentally, an attack by one side pressed forward against the trenches of the other side. Often, only minimal gains would be made before the defenders would stop the offensive. Rarely, substantial gains might be made, yet no decisive action was generally possible -- due to the effectiveness of the multiple lines of trenches constructed by the defenders.
