Actually, benefits are derived based on the character of the veterans discharge. Once a year the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) publishes a booklet that describes (generally) all the veterans benefits. If a veteran has an honorable discharge, he/she is eligible for all (should he/she meet the requirments). If he/she has a general discharge, the veteran is not eligible for education benefits (GI Bill). If the Veteran has an "other than honorable" discharge, it is up to the DVA to determine if he/she will be paid for compensation for service connected disabilities and will determine if the other benefits will be paid out as well. If the veteran has a Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD), he/she can be buried in a Veteran Cemetary but isn't eligible for much else. A dishonorable discharge excludes the veteran from all benefits.
