US Soldiers stationed in Leghorn susequent to its WWII liberation would likely have been members of various support units i.e. Quartermaster etc. or Military Police. The various support and MP units were components of PBS (The US Peninsular Base Section).

Subsequent to the German Surrender, and by late 1945 and for several subsequent years Leghorn was the main port for supplying and reinforcing the US 88th Infantry Division (AKA as the Blue Devils). The 88th was deployed along the "Morgan Line" to deter Yugoslavia from occupying Italian Trieste and the US support troops stationed in Leghorn were essential to that operation.

I sincerely hope this input may be of help.
