I don't think that you can or should forget them. The pain associated with them lessens over time to where you feel either neutral or happy when you think of them.
Since depression is a mental illness, it will effect you mental stability. No saying that a person with depression is crazy, but that they might be offputting to fellow co-workers. Depression has also been shown to have physical effects, so lack of motivation and chronic pain can also effect work. They're less likely to be socialable but that's nit always a biggie depending on the job. Hope this helps.
