The Taino people employed various methods to resist slavery, including flight, armed rebellion, and forming alliances with other Indigenous groups. They would often escape to remote areas or mountainous regions to evade capture. Some Taino also engaged in direct confrontations with European colonizers, attempting to defend their land and way of life. Additionally, they sought to preserve their culture and identity despite the oppressive conditions imposed by colonization.
In Taino culture, a "coyaba" refers to a ceremonial house or communal space used for gatherings, rituals, and important community events. It served as a central hub for social interaction and cultural practices among the Taino people. The coyaba was typically constructed using natural materials and symbolized the community's spiritual and social life.

The most important Taino words we use are barbecue and cannibal. People familiar with Puerto Rico know other Taino words, such as bohio, a native hut, and borinquen,"Puerto Rican."
The European way of life at that time was more focused on industrialization, technology, and hierarchy, while the Taino way of life was more communal, centered around agriculture, fishing, and spiritual beliefs. Europeans valued individualism and ownership, while Tainos had a more collective approach to land and resources sharing. This led to conflicts and misunderstandings between the two cultures when they encountered each other in the Americas.
