The Chinese write in 'characters' called 'Hanzi'. You and I would be unable to write or pronounce them.

When you want to write the Chinese language in a form that non-Chinese people can read or pronounce (using Westernized-lettering), you use a system called 'pinyin' which translates the Chinese characters into westernized-alphabetical words.
They don't write from right to left or left to right, they write from up to down.

Carefully. Upper left, to right and down for each character. There are many exceptions, as with all languages, such as Feng, which is written right to left and down. Stroke order is important to learn, start with the 5 basic strokes.
