His diary states it was "green" and "flat" and the island was " fairly large." He wrote, " I went north-east the length of the island, in order to see the other part, which is the eastern part, which there is." He reported seeing, two or three Indian villages, people who came to the beach offering gifts, a big stone reef that encircled the island, a harbor between the reef that was deep enough for ships, a good place for a fort, and that the entire population of the island could be subdued by 50 Spaniards.
