Because that collection of white rich boys were the best educated, smartest and knowledgable by-product of the Enlightenment that had ever gotten together and not been hanged for doing it. And they could.... They knew that they had to figure out what was going to happen next, and they knew that they, personally, were not going to be around to decide the next steps. Go to the writtings of the Federalist Papers, and to the notes from various people about the Constitutional conventions.... Look at the lives of the people who were the so called founding fathers. These people were not hothouse nor vaccum-packed. They bleed a bunch. It was totally political, but they all had read the same books, that all had the same ideas, and almost none agreed on how to get to the same place. So, they compromised.
