A combination of things underlay the conflict between the US Government and the Mormons called the Utah War. Utah was a US territory. The Mormons were creating a theocratic (religious) government. There was conflict between Mormon leaders and a few of the men sent by the US to be administrators in Utah. This conflict was with men who were hostile to Mormonism. In particular the Mormon religious doctrine promoting polygamy (taking multiple wives) was considered by much of the US as gross immorality. Because of strife over slavery at the time, there were rumblings of rebellion in other territories. Some say it was because of this spreading unrest in the territories that then President James Buchanan appointed a governor in the place of Brigham Young and sent troops to Utah. Others say Buchanan was using the general prejudice against Mormons to direct attention away from the the growing strife between North and South and the growing movement for secession in the South and thus unite the States.
