The bombing of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior in 1985 by French intelligence agents highlighted the lengths to which governments would go to suppress environmental activism, leading to increased global awareness and support for environmental causes. This incident galvanized the anti-nuclear movement and strengthened international environmental legislation. Today, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle between state interests and ecological advocacy, influencing how environmental organizations operate and campaign. The legacy of the bombing continues to inspire activism, fostering a culture of resilience and commitment to environmental protection worldwide.

How were people affected by the bombing of the rainbow warrior?

New Zealand citizens were shocked and outraged at the French attack on the 'Rainbow Warrior' in 1984. After New Zealands first and only terroist attack, Auckland citizens were extreamly supportive. Donating clothes, money and food to Greenpeace acted as NZ's main system to overcome the outrage of the bombing. New Zealand is still effected in some ways today from the bombing. French/NZ relationship was destroyed and Nz nolonger trusted the U.K. or the U.S for not standing up for New Zealand. New Zealand trades were banned by French government and NZ eports began to run bankrupt due to the lack of Trade income and NZ econmony was under major pressure. A deal was then struck between New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange and French government officials to release French Secret Service agents Marfat and Prieur from jail and move them to a French military base on Hao atoll for three years, in exchange for an apology from France and reparations of $13 million. However, the two agents had returned to France by May 1988 and both were later promoted. The French were required to pay further reparations in return for the violation of the agreement. This increased outrage and concern for enviromental changes. In 1985 The New Zealand Free Zone, Disarmament and Arms Control Act comes into force, which is the Act making New Zealand a nuclear-free nation. New Zealand relationships within the ANZUS treaty never was the same again. The Rainbow Warrior was given a final resting place near Matauri Bay in the Cavalli islands.
