I am assuming this means in the times of colonialization. the southern colonies were different because of there base in agriculture rather than industry. the north had many factories, especially during the Industrial revolution. The south had plenty of fertile land used mostly for cash crops such as cotton, indigo, and tobacco. Another difference was the widespread use of slaves on plantations in the south, whereas in the north women and children working in factories.
