What was trench warfare and why was it so destructive?

Trench warfare was when soldiers dug holes in the ground so they could hide and be protected from the enemy but also be able to attack. Trench warfare was so destructive because it dragged on for long periods of time, trenches took up a lot of land, a lot of corpses were left in the middle of no mans land, anything between the trenches was pretty much destroyed.

What did they call the field of battle that existed between opposing trenches in World War 1?

It is called 'No Mans Land'. Crossing it to atack the Enemy is perilous. It is a feature of trench warfare on the Western front.

Describe trench warfare and trench foot?

in WW1 the soldiers dug trenches (ditches) and lived down there and the land between was no mans land. trench foot is where your foot gets so wet and so cold from being in the trenches that it gets big and swollen and it usually gets so bad that it needs to be amputated

Why was the area between enemy trenches called no man's land?

The area between trenches was called 'No-mans land'. This is because whenever a man was sent into no mans land it was basically a suicide mission because as soon as he stepped out of his trench he would be shot by the enemy. Because of everyone being shot as soon as they came out of their trench, no men were in that area and so it was called no mans land.

How many Germans died in No-Man's-Land World War 2?

I think your getting your world wars mixed up it is World War 1 that in infamous for trench warfare as well as no mans land the land in between the two forward trenches. However it is actually estimated that 2,036,897 Germans were killed in world war 1. Estimates to my knowledge of how many were killed in no mans land itself have not been worked out however a large percentage were killed in no mans land. What was fighting like during trench warfare?

in trench warfare, fighting was one of the most devious battles, soldiers had to prepare for it. they had to load up their guns several time, had to stand in one place for probably hours looking for people who come across no-mans land.

How trench warfare was fought?

During WWI, in trench warfare, German armies dug holes in the ground that were 6 to 8 ft. tall, and wide enough that 2 soldiers could walk side by side at the same time! Trench warfare was fought by one group of soldiers advancing across no mans land to assault the enemy trench quickly, before returning to their trench to apply defensive fire on the enemy, who has retaliated by assaulting their trench. Then the enemy return once fire has ceased. Then they wait for the next move to be made.

What is the situation of the western front?

it was pretty much a dead lock because of trench warfare. neither side could progress forward. trench warfare was when two countries dig trenches and have solders live in the trenches (which were filled with cold muddy water) and just shoot at each other when other side tries to cross "no mans land" or the space between the trenches. people also got trench foot from standing in the water 24/7. overall trench warfare was very deadly and there was never a winner.

What is significant about the fortifications in the US Civil War and wars fought after it?

For the most part, trench warfare in the US Civil War was quite different than trench warfare in wars fought after it. For example, there is the misconception that trench warfare in World War One was a throw back to the trenches in the US Civil War. Here are the differences: 1. Trench warfare in the context of the US Civil War refers to battles that were centered on the presence of significant earthworks used primarily for defense; and 2. Trench warfare in World War One for example was the result of bogged offensives that created a matrix of complicated trenches that provided a "shelter" for armies of both sides in between repeated charges over a "no mans land" that usually ended in a draw.

How did Britain attack from the trenches in World War 1?

Well, first of all, there was a spot called 'no mans land' which literally meant, no man went on this land. Sand bags were piled up around each trench and you quickly poked your gun up and shot. Hopefully you shot something. Also, no mans land basically was the area in between the two trenches. No man went here because there was a 99.99999% chance you wouldn't make it back to the trench. YOU LIVE IN THE TRENCH!!
