The war was between God's archangels and Lucifer, who rebelled against God because of jealousy of the Son. Lucifer's side lost and he and his minions (one third of the angels) were cast into Hell. This heavenly civil war comes from Jewish-Christian-Islamic traditions (it is not mentioned in The Bible but is found in the Talmud) and was popularized by the English poet John Milton in his epic "Paradise Lost." Milton was a Puritan but Satan comes across as a heroic figure in the poem which, by the way, is the origin of the often heard, "Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven."
