In Germany in particular there was a general feeling amongst the population that the country had been put under a lot of undue economic pressure after the First World War, that could have been reduced if they had a larger empire. Japan and Italy also wanted larger empires. This inspired the annexation of Austria by Germany, which eventually lead to the Second World War.
It certainly helped, as Germany sent part of its air force, and Italy contributed a large army, but Franco's Spanish Foreign Legion (flown in by airplane from Spanish Morocco) were probably the most decisive factor in the opinion of this contributor.
