How long do you have to stay in the armed forces?

Enlistments vary in length. The most common is an 8 year contract. the first 4 years are active duty, the last four are what is called (in the Marine Corps anyway) the Inactive Ready Reserve. During the last 4 years you are back in the civilian world, but could be recalled if need be. Others can be 6x2 (6 active 2 inactive). Officers have different stipulations than enlisted, as do the reserves and the National Guard. I would say to ask your local recruiter. They will be able to tell you all of this info much better.
