"Iroquois" is the name of a group of originally five, later six tribes. When this group came together as a league is subject to much debate.

Some modern writers claim that the league was formed on a specific date in 1142 AD; others put the date anywhere between 1350 and 1600. Still others give the period 1400 to 1600. Another version states that it took place in precisely 1451 on the basis of a total solar eclipse which is mentioned in Iroquois tradition. The 1142 date is hotly disputed.

The date that the Tuscarora joined the Iroquois league is certain - 1722. The date that the original league formed is simply unknown. The difference is recorded data; there was none at the time of the original tribes joining together, but there was plenty at the time of the Tuscarora joining. That data was provided entirely by white people.
