Mark organised the first gospel account of the death of Jesus in a twenty-four hour cycle, neatly divided into eight three-hour segments. The story started (14:17) "when it was evening", or approximately 6 pm. The Passover meal lasts for three hours and is concluded with the singing of a hymn, after which HJesus went to the Garden of Gethsemene. He was arrested at 12 midnight and taken before the High Priests at 3 o'clock in the morning and then before Pontius Pilate at 6 o'clock.

Mark told his readers once again that this drama has been shaped liturgically, saying, " It was the third hour," or 9 o'clock "when they crucified him". When "the sixth hour had come" (12 noon), darkness covered the whole earth for 3 hours, at which time Jesus said "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" He was buried by 6 pm and the start of the Jewish Sabbath.

On this original account, more or less faithfully followed by the other gospels, Jesus died after exactly twelve hours on the cross.
