Aproximately 4 million Service men in the Navy Army and Air Force. 16 million men & women served in the US Military during WW 2.
Approximately 6 million men & 350,000 women volunteered & were accepted into the US military service, plus another 350,000 National Guardsmen (who were volunteers) were federalized (put into the Regular Military Service). Not everyone that actually volunteered was medically cleared & approved for induction into the military. In addition to those that volunteered, another 11.5 million men were drafted by the Selective Service to serve in the US military. The first 900,000 "draftees" were selected starting on October 29, 1940 (before the US entry into the war). Although not all volunteers or draftees served in overseas combat. Of the 16.8 million Americans that served in the US military, about 73% (or almost 12 million) of these went on to deploy overseas where the war was fought.
Different sites will provide different numbers but 16,353,639 seems to be close.
It is about remembering those who died or served in the armed forces.

Neither served.
Americans celebrate veteran's to salute all who served in the armed forces. Americans also celebrate it because many people died while serving in the armed forces, so at the 11th hour of veteran's day there is a moment of silence. Americans also celebrate it because the day means a day of from work.
