In World War I, tanks were first used. The were top secret but very large. To get the tanks to the battle field unnoticed, they were put into crates labeled "water tanks". They were nicknamed "Water Tanks" but the name was shortened over time to "Tanks".

An exact count of destroyed tanks was not kept by everyone in WW2. Some of the battles had exact counts but some places did not. You have to remember tanks were being used by the Allies and the Axis forces. You can believe they were not always going to reveal to one another how many they lost. Some of the tank troops were surprised 30 to 50 years later how many were really destroyed when they learned the truth. I would hazard a guess it could be close to 10 thousand world wide.
