During World War Two: When German U-Boats (submarines) concentrated in an attack against British & American convoys in the North Atlantic or Arctic Oceans, these groups of U-Boats were often called "wolf-packs" in english. The size of the wolf-pack would vary depending on the number of U-Boats actually available in the area at that time. The number could be anywhere from 2 to maybe 20 at the most. Actual historical records of U-Boat attacks & deployments could probably be used to determine a more accurate picture of how many German U-Boats attacked each individual convoy.
