No one knows for sure, but it is estimated that over eight million Black and Indian slaves died working in the mines during the Spanish colonial period from 1545 to 1825. Local workers continue to die in the mines to this day.

Dick Mine died on June 10, 1991.

Because of this mining accident 12 men died and there has been reported only 1 man survived this disaster.
