During World War I, approximately 100,000 Portuguese troops were deployed to the conflict. Portugal entered the war in 1916, primarily fighting on the Western Front in support of the Allies. The Portuguese Expeditionary Corps participated in significant battles, including the Battle of La Lys in 1918. Despite their contributions, Portugal faced considerable challenges, including heavy casualties and logistical difficulties.
