No battles were fought in Key West during the Civil War. It was occupied while under construction as the war began by Union troops. Since it was so impregnable, it remained in Union hands throughout the war despite being hundreds of miles behind "enemy" lines. Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West was exceedingly critical in the war due to it being the linchpin between the Gulf and the Atlantic Blockade Squadrons. Over 600 southern blockade runners were captured by the Union blockade patrols and sold at auction at Key West. The success of the blockade clearly cut the length of the war possibly by two years as the South ran out of the means to fight.

The Civil War was fought throughout much of the United States, but predominantly in the Southern states. Virginia had many battles. There were many engagements along the edges of the Confederacy, many at sea. From Pennsylvania south, there were battles in all of the states. There were even naval engagements all the way to the east close to the coast of Europe.
There were hundreds of battles during the US Civil War from New Jersey and Pennsylvania onward to the west, north, and south in other states. Only two took place in northern territory., although the South made many raids into the North. The majority of the rest took place in Virginia, but there were also a smattering of actions in the Far West.
