The Spanish intented to destroy their culture due to christnianisation. The Mayans were enslaved and abused. There were a few rebelions under the Spanish rule. Some Mayans left bigger aglomeration and settled on the countryside. Overall many Mayans live till today.

Spanish explorers and conquistadors, most likely headed by Rodrigo de Bastidas or Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The name was after Columbus, of course, with whom Bastidas sailed, but not because he "founded" it, but to refer to ALL Spanish territories and colonies of the New World.
They usually were explorers and looked for riches. Whenever they found a discovery they either kept it for themself or gave it to the country they orginated from.

The mustangs of the American West are descended from horses that escaped captivity, or were turned loose by Spanish settlers. Purer forms of the Spanish horses exist still in the stock of Caribbean Paso Fino horses, Latin American Criollo horses, and especially in the refined Peruvian Paso horses found in Peru, and increasingly imported and bred in the USA.
