Why was slavery bad in America?

The "badness" of slavery in America began in the transport of slaves across the Atlantic, where they were packed like human sardines. Many, many Africans died on the way to America. Furthermore, once in America, the slaves on plantations were often treated cruelly. They were forced to work for long hours. Slaves were kept in primitive cabins with terrible living conditions. Many were subjected to whipping or other forms of punishment. Slaves could be sold at any time. Many families were broken up through the slave trade. Aside from problems for the slaves (though they were many) slavery was (and is) an unsustainable economic system. Slaves were expensive to own, and worked as little as possible (If one has no hope of advancement, one has no incentive to work any harder than necessary to avoid punishment). They often intentionally destroyed equipment. Slaves were kept intentionally uneducated (to avoid chance of rebellion) which meant their skills were limited and industry was not an option. (This led to the economic stagnation in the South leading up to the Civil War.) The largest problem with slavery was that it involved the oppression of a human being by another. Slaves had no say in their lives and were denied education and even basic civil rights.

How did the slaves get watermelon to north America?

Watermelons were not brought to North America by slaves; rather, they originated in Africa and were cultivated there for centuries. Enslaved Africans brought watermelon seeds with them during the transatlantic slave trade, as the fruit was a staple in their diets. Once in North America, they planted the seeds and cultivated the fruit, which eventually became popular in Southern cuisine. Watermelon thrived in the warm climate, further integrating into the agricultural landscape of the region.

What did slaves believe in?

Most slaves arriving in America (the country) were delivered by British slaving ships that had collected the slaves from the coast of Guinea in west Africa. Almost all of the slaves brought fresh from Africa would have followed any one of the many different traditional religions practised by their people. It is from this mixture of traditional religions that the Voudou (Voodoo) religion of Haiti has since emerged. Once the slaves had arrived in America most of them were converted to Christianity by European missionary priests. However, some didn't convert (especially in Haiti) and this is where we get Voudou.

How were slaves treated on the way to America?

Slaves were treated bad. Many were laid on their sides so they could fit more slaves on the ship. The women were raped by the slave owners, not many survived. If any slave got sick or died they were thrown overboard so they would not make other slaves sick. Slaves were brought about once a week on deck to be exercised so they would look healthy before being sold. The slave owners would put oil on the slaves mouth to make them look as if they ate. Many slaves risked their lives by throwing themselves overboard. Where the slaves slept on the ship there was no light, not much air, their were smells of dead bodies, vomit, and blood. Not many slaves survived, only a few made it to America. Thank you hope u enjoyed it...for more farther details on slaves watch the movie " roots" best movie ever main character is Kunta Kinte....but was renamed "Toby" by his owner.
