I have seen two figures: 2 million or 1.2 million. I think the reason the figures differ is that they don't include the 300,000 women who served in the armed forces and the women who served in the auxiliary forces or the service men who served on the mainland USA. The Military Channel says it was 2 million and I believe them. The US Census Bureau had a figure of the veterans of that war but I cannot find that link for you.
