1 or 11 Apollo 11 was the first mission that landed a man on the moon. But there were no failed attempts. The previous 10 missions were practise flights. One or two flew out to the Moon and returned without landing but the mission was planned that way. We did loose one crew during practise. And Apollo 13 was a failed attempt that occurred after Apollo 11. So, the answer is that we made it to the moon the first time we tried.
