Antibiotics as we know them, such as penicillin and the like, did not exist in 1928. Even the earliest antibiotic -- sulfonamide, or 'sulfa' as it was called -- was not marketed until the late 1930s. Penicillin came along late in WWII.

In 1928, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide were the main weapons against infections and bacteria.
