Probably food would cost a few pennies which were silver coins. At that cost, gold would be too much to buy some food. If you had a few gold, you were most likly rich and could have a feast if you wanted. So I would say 2 or 3 pennies for some meat. And 1 or 2 for a loaf of bread.
