AnswerWe really do not have a way to know how much education ordinary people had, but we do know that the Byzantine Empire ran a system of primary schools with the idea that all military personnel would be able to read and write. We also know that King Alfred the Great of England instituted a policy that all people of the status of freeman and higher should be able to get education to read and write in English. I have known medieval scholars who have said they thought as much as half the population of England was literate at times in the Middle Ages, but we cannot know for certain.
