The 1700's was rather stinky. Few people had the luxury of a hot bath. To get a bath ( cold) meant carrying pails of water to a tub and getting in the tub with a wash rag. Often several people used the tub of water. Many just used a damp rag to wipe themselves. I remember reading one account in a diary entry by a colonist breaking the ice outside to wash their face in the cold water. Because of the hardships and the beliefs that bathing was bad for skin few took baths on a regular basis.
