It was effective in terms of body count but in terms of the war it would seem that it was not as effective as thought out to be. this was because the American army was getting 'fed up' as they would sometimes not find a single VC but they would end up losing a couple of servicemen or losing a vital ligament due to booby traps. mentally this would effect the US. Overall it was effective but to what extent? body count was good but morale and willingness of troops was deteriorating.
what were the american tactics in the vietnam war
Napalm bombing

Vietnam was a war of attrition. Kill as many communists as possible. The communists in turn, will try to do the same to us. He that kills the most wins the war. The measuring device was the "Body Count." The tactic used was "Search and Destroy." Vietnam War: 1. Strategy-Attrition 2. Tactics-Search and Destroy 3. Result (add em up)-Body Count
1. War aim-Discourage, prove futile, and ultimately stop North Vietnam from pursuing their conquest of South Vietnam by the use of over-whelming and superior firepower. 2. Strategy-Become so destructive to North Vietnam, and kill so many North Vietnamese & Viet Cong, that they will ultimately stop pursuing the war...realizing that it is futile and useless against the superior & over-whelming might of the US. The tactic employed would be search & destroy; the measuring device would be the body count.
what were the american tactics in the vietnam war
Strategy-Attrition Tactic-Search & Destroy
The strategy in the Vietnam War was to attrit the enemy. Kill more of them than they could of us. The tactic of "Search and Destroy", which resulted in the process of counting bodies (the body count), became the normal function of the Vietnam War.
Strategy: Attrition Tactic: Search & Destroy Accounting process: Body Count
Strategy (over all plan to obtain objective); attrition. Tactics (methods used to obtain objective); search and destroy.
The war of attritition. Body count; Search and Destroy. Kill more of them than they could of us.
Search and Destroy, Seek and Destroy, or even simply S&D, refers to the military strategy that was deployed during the Vietnam War to search for hidden enemy camps and then to kill everyone there using massive firepower.
A war of attrition was the strategy. Search & destroy was the tactic (method) used to achieve that plan (strategy). Reason: Because taking ground would not be the objective as all other past wars had been. Vietnam would be strictly body count.
Attrition; eliminate them, until there were no more (search & destroy). Measuring stick: the body count
