There are a lot of different views on what did and what did not contribute to this defeat.

  • One step was "The great buffalo hunts" where American's were paid money to slaughter the buffalo thereby causing a depletion of both food and clothing.
  • Another step was the fostering of hatred between competing tribal units (this same bickering and arguing continues today) - the old "Divide and Conquer" technique.
  • Another very successful tactic was "The Scorched Earth Policy" originally used by the Texas Rangers in driving out Indians: this policy was simple, kill all Indians (Man, Woman, Child)(Genocide); burn every home, destroy every food source, etc.
