He fully controlled the Soviet economy.
Totalitarianism is a system of government in which all social, political, economic, intellectual, cultural, and spiritual activities are controlled by the rulers of a state. A totalitarian state is ruled by a leader who controls a political party, such as Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler, Communist China under Mao tse-tung, and the USSR under Joseph Stalin.
Joseph Stalin was not named leader, Lenin named him one of a group of rulers of the USSR. Past that, he gained his power over the Soviet Union through A Divide and Conquer strategy. If that strategy failed, he used his position as the Secretary of the Communist Party to weed out dissenters that did not always agree with Stalin's methods. His power in the Politburo was staggering. He filled all vacancies with people he trusted and others were either tried for treason or in some cases they "vanished" as Stalin had them liquidated. Lenin's premature death in 1924, enabled Stalin to solidify his power. Also, true Marxists, such as Trotsky were pushed out of the Party and were exiled and later murdered.
Hitler, Mussolini, whatever group has controlled politics in America forever
Allies- U.S.- Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Soviet Union- Joseph Stalin, Britain- Winston Churchill. Axis- Italy- Benito Mussolini, Germany- Adolph Hitler, Japan- Hideki Tojo.
Communism didn't last in Russia because Stalin had a warped idea of communism. It failed because it never was true communism, but was always corrupted. I believe it was not communism in the USSR, but more of a deadly mix of Socialism and Totalitarianism.

Stalin was one of the rulers. He killed millions of people and was vicious. He was so mean that when he died he laid on his office floor before the cleaning lady got up enough nerve to go into the office after a few days.

Joseph Stalin differed from other totalitarian rulers of his time primarily through his emphasis on rapid industrialization and collectivization, which he implemented through brutal policies like the Great Purge and forced famines. His regime was marked by a unique blend of Marxist-Leninist ideology adapted to Russian conditions, focusing on building a socialist state while suppressing dissent and enforcing strict control over society. Unlike some contemporaries, Stalin's rule was characterized by a cult of personality that elevated him as the infallible leader of the Communist Party, fostering intense loyalty and fear among the populace. Furthermore, he maintained a significant degree of control over the economy and society through state monopolization, which was more extreme than in other totalitarian regimes.

Rulers with total authority are often referred to as autocrats or dictators. They wield absolute power over a state or organization, making decisions without legal constraints or democratic processes. Such leaders may suppress dissent, control the media, and limit political freedoms to maintain their grip on power. Examples include historical figures like Joseph Stalin or modern leaders in authoritarian regimes.
