His family home, Arlington, was turned into a graveyard to bury dead Union soldiers. Arlington Cemetary is now a National shrine. Also, Lee's US citizenship was revoked and not restored until 1975, long after his death of course.

When Robert E. Lee surrendered, he was treated with respect. Normally a defeated general handed over his sword as a sign of surrender. Grant ordered that all officers would keep their side arms. Usually the winning side took the horses and wagons. Again Grant ordered that would not happen. Some in the North wanted him tried for treason. Grant opposed them. A northern insurance company offered him a job which he turned down.

He became the president of Washington College, which is now Washington and Lee University. It was a Presbyterian College and he was a Methodist.
