Many conveniences, machines, and automation that we take for granted today did not exist, so more work had to be done to produce food, clothing, etc.

Transportation was slower, so even basics like wheat, meat, milk, and cheese could be unavailable in certain areas at certain times. However, people grew more food in their own gardens and farms, so they were not accustomed to finding everything in stores.

There was a war going on, so many wives were working the farm while their husbands were away in the Army. The Revolution was also a sort of civil war--some colonials supported the revolution but others were loyal to the Crown. In some cases neighbor became enemies because of their differences on the issue of separating from the British Empire.
