The discovery of element 102 was first announced by physicists at the Nobel Institute in Sweden in 1957. The team reported that they created an isotope with a half-life of 10 minutes, decaying by emission of an 8.5 MeV alpha particle, after bombarding 244Cm with 13C nuclei. The activity was assigned to 251102 or 253102. The scientists proposed the name nobelium (No) for the new element. Later they retracted their claim and associated the activity to background effects.
Niobium was discovered first.
The chemical element nobelium was not discovered by Alfred Nobel. See the link below.
The name of nobelium is derived from the name of the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel.
Nobelium was prepared for the first time in 1966 at Joint Institute of Nuclear research, Dubna, Russia. The isotope was No-252.The appearance of nobelium is not known.
Nobelium is an artificial chemical element, radioactive and unstable. Nobelium was first and surely prepared in 1966 by Russian physicists from Dubna; another claim from American physicists (1958) was not accepted by IUPAC. Nobelium was obtained using this nuclear reaction 238 92U + 2210Ne → 260102No* → 254102No + 6 10n

Nobelium is a member of the actinoids family: before nobelium in the periodic table is mendelevium and after nobelium is lawrencium. It is supposed that nobelium is similar to ytterbium.
Nobelium is an element, so it is a pure substance made of nobelium.
