Since the Union won the war, and the North suffered very little battle damage in the war (Penn. was one of the few exceptions); the economy of the Union after the Civil War was very prosperous. The North made a lot of money and the prosperity, (among other things), built the first USA trans-continental railroad from Iowa to California.
