The Plains Indians never lost their battle to keep their land and their way of life. They grew weary in battling for lands that were being overtaken by whites and the influx of different people and different cultures. For example: As recorded by the witnesses of Quanah Parker, last Chief of the Comanches, who based his decision to surrender after seeking the Great Spirit whether to fight or surrender. After asking the question, he saw a coyote come up to him, its sad, fearful eyes reminded him of the children who were being slaughtered by whites. The coyote then ran towards Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After a while he saw a crow flying above. The crow swooped down and circled around his head. He said that looking into its eyes was like looking into the eyes of the elderly of the tribe. They were tired and unable to continue in battles. The crow then circled above and also flew towards Fort Sill. He interpreted this as the Great Spirit leading him to surrender for the sake of peace, the tribe and future generations. He then surrendered...not to white men...but to the Great Spirit. Many other tribes surrendered also, seeking peace for the sake of their families. The white men also were slaughtering the buffalo in order to cut off their major resource. Still, their traditions are recognized and honored, as they should be, in their gatherings at powwows and are taught to their children. Being from Oklahoma, I have yet to meet a Native American, Comanche, Kiowa, Apache Blackfoot or Cherokee who is not proud of their heritage or has not been taught of their ancestors way of life.
