How we know Rome's early history?

Rome is built on layers and layers of history and the ruins of the past can be seen today. There is nearly 3,000 years of history and Rome dates back to 625 BC. It is the oldest continuously populated city in the world and its population of more than a million was not matched by any other city until ?ondon overtook it in the 19th century. The first ever shopping mall was built by Trajan and had several levels with 150 outlets of sellers and food stalls.( today it is open to visitors). Roman towns had public lavatories and running water carried waste to the main drain. By the early fourth century they had a road network of 53,000 miles and every 4,800 feet was marked by a milestone ( many of these roads still exist) . The Colosseum opened with the killing of 5,000 animals and it is estimated that 500,000 people and over a million animals were killed there. It had a sun roof that could be stretched over the crowd and it took 12 years to build. The exit time for all 70,000 spectators was only 3 minutes. All of this history was written about and can be seen today. Medieval monks also copied and illustrated the works of Roman writers and philosophy.
