A wide range of goods could be made more efficiently
Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin in 1793 revolutionized the cotton industry by significantly increasing the efficiency of cotton processing, which led to a boom in cotton production in the Southern United States. This innovation not only made cotton a highly profitable crop but also intensified the reliance on slave labor, as plantations expanded to meet the growing demand. Additionally, Whitney's promotion of interchangeable parts in manufacturing laid the groundwork for modern assembly line production, transforming various industries and contributing to the Industrial Revolution. Overall, Whitney's contributions had lasting effects on both agriculture and manufacturing in America.
When Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, it made it possible to grow short staple cotton throughout the southern part of the United States. Cotton replaced linen as the material to wear in the summer. Since cotton required a long growing season, it became a major crop for the South. Since it was labor intensive, slaves were the preferred source of labor. Since it required so much water, the South was one of the few places on earth where it could be grown in commercial quantities. As a result, slave owners considered slaves necessary. Thus, it maintained the institution of slavery. (It would be around 1900 before a commercially successful cotton picking machine would be created.)
