You just answered your own question. Also, the US never gained independence from 'England', but the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (as Ireland was part of the union at the time.) Do not confuse Great Britain with 'England' as it's just one of four parts of the UK, and the term offends the Welsh, Scots and Northern Irish. Also, when the US gained independence, only the 13 states of the Eastern Seaboard gained Independence, as they were the only states controlled by Britain.

No-one won it, it ended in the Anglo-Irish treaty It ended in a treaty so you could say nobody won but that's false. The Republic of Ireland won because they gained there independence, the UK lost because they lost land. The UK did not hold on to their land, therefor they lost.
