The Huron lived in villages built near water and the forest. The village was protected by defensive walls made from 9 meter poles. Saplings were woven between the poles to fill in holes and strengthen the walls. They lived in longhouses made of cedar slabs tied together on an arching wooden frame. Longhouses could be over 100 feet long and holds about 10 families. Between 2 families was fire for warmth, cooking, and conversation. Although 2 families shared 1 fire, each family was responsible for cooking their own food. The Huron slept on animal skins or mats-reeds on a raised platform beside the fire. They used blankets made out of bearskins especially in the cold winters. At one end was the storage room to hang preserved corn. At each end of the longhouse was a door. Openings were left on the roof so the inside of the longhouse would be bright and the openings also allowed smoke to escape.

What kinds of shelters did the first nations Huron people have?

The Huron people, also known as the Wendat, primarily lived in longhouses, which were large, elongated structures made of wooden frames covered with bark. These longhouses could accommodate multiple families and were central to their social and communal life. They also constructed smaller, temporary shelters for seasonal activities, such as hunting or fishing, often using materials readily available in their environment. The design of their shelters reflected their reliance on the surrounding natural resources and their communal lifestyle.
