An SS Death's Head Unit, using the model established in Dachau, administered each camp. The SS unit was split into two groups.

The organisation inside the camp would include:

  • The camp commandant (Lagerkommandant) and his personal staff, made up of junior officers;
  • The security police;
  • The commander of the detention facilities together with his staff, once again junior officers;
  • Male and female guards and wardens, who were usually German or Ukrainian. Sometimes they were criminals released from German prisons;
  • Administration and accounting staff;
  • A camp hospital, run by an SS doctor with several medical assistants. Doctors were in charge of the selection of prisoners. They would conduct medical experiments using prisoners as guinea pigs to aid research.

Often the SS officers and orderlies would be extremely brutal to prisoners. Punishments were carried out at the whim of the guards.

The Nazis got away of running the Camps and the Holocaust because, Hitler was one of the most famous speakers of his time. He had a way with words. He was passionate when he spoke and moved his audiences when he spoke. Hitler began speaking to the masses of the German people at the time that the United States was going through the depression. Hitler made numerous promises to the Germans that he would never allow them to fall into a depression like the American were. After he was elected, he changed a lot of the things that he promised. Prior to him becoming elected, he was not antisemitic. He became antisemitic after he was elected. After elected he told the Germans that the reason for the depression was due to the Jewish people and the lesser people (homosexual, disabled people, gypsies, etc.) Hitler began to turn the German population against the 'non-desirables'. The mass destruction that he did get a way with snowballed over time and the destruction built upon itself.
