Life in nineteenth century France was very hard for women. First of all, the economy was such that men often were required to travel for work. As a result, women were left to run the farm, care for the children, and often care for elderly parents and in-laws as well. If money was scarce, and tuition could be paid for but one child, it was going to be for the boys. Women were definitely second class citizens. Marriages were usually arranged during this time, and the roles of husband and wife clearly defined.
